Hey all you super smart fishy people!
This is Bubblina (not my first choice but Xenomorph was already taken).
She lives in a heavily planted 40gl breeder
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 15
Ammonia 0
pH 7.5 – steady
Temp 78
Part of a well established sorority (super peaceful), with panda Corys, 2 female pearl gouramis, and some ember & glass bloodfin tetras.
Bubblina has always been a bigger girl, but the last few weeks she really ballooned up. I thought perhaps she gorged herself on shrimp (was testing out adding them to the tank… My ladies hunting instincts were too strong) but I've had her separated in a mesh breeders box for over a week now. She hasn't gotten any smaller, she's had food withheld for the past 3-4 days, she's still very active, WANTS her food, and ultimately acting normal, albeit a bit lazier- more laying around like it's just too difficult to swim as much as often unless something peaks her interest.
I have seen her poop too!
Tonight I noticed a bit of white on her abdomen (behind the egg spot) and I'm really, really hoping it's not the start of a prolapse…. Thoughts?

This is far from normal and not eggs. This is bloat and could be severe constipation or worse.
I’ve had a ton of females in a sorority for years and never had a girl look like that.
Fast her to start with for a couple of days. Watch for pineconing. Probably a good idea to treat her like she’s got dropsy. Swelling like this could mean fluid retention from organ failure too.
Hoping for the best for her OP. hugs
dropsy
severe dropsy
Egg rot. You can try to squeeze them out but it may rupture inside her. You can try salt but it usually doesn’t do much. Raise water temps to 80 and keep her in a shallow container with low or no light feed daphnia if you can or food medicated with kanaplex.
My betta just died from over eating and her belly had just barely started to look abnormal. This is bigger than she looked, after she died… Before the death void.
I. Wow. This whole post is very upsetting.
